Marĩĩtwa Maya, translated as These Names, very briefly touches on one of the dominant origin legends of the Kikuyu people. It is widely accepted that the Kikuyu nation is comprised of 10 major clans, each named after a corresponding daughter of Gĩkũyũ and Mũmbi, who are widely believed to be the founding father and mother of the Agĩkũyũ people. In the Reke Mahike story, Marĩĩtwa Maya is used as a song of comfort and as tactful reminder of women’s honoured place in society.
